Some people mentally relate density to the firmness of foams, and that relationship is totally incorrect. Foams with an extremely wide range of hardness can be made at an extremely wide range of densities. The density of foam is the weight in pounds per cubic foot. Density of foam is directly related to the ability to withstand continual use over time.
 
The American Home Furnituer Alliance has come up with polyurethane foam standards that the alliance feels is in the best interest of the industry.
